EXPO bids and candidacy for future EXPO

The EXPO application and candidacy for the future EXPO 2030 has been running since 29.04.2021.

On this day the list of candidates was closed by the B.I.E. six months after the submission of the first candidacy (on 29.4.2021 by Russia).

Five countries and cities are currently bidding for EXPO 2030.

Five countries and cities are competing to host the 2030 World Expo.

After closing the list on 29.10.2021, the following five candidates are determined:

  • Russia, Moscow
    Motto: "Human Progress: A Shared Vision for a World of Harmony".
  • South Korea, Busan
    Motto: "Transforming Our World, Navigating Toward a Better Future".
  • Italy, Rome
    Motto: "The Horizontal City: Urban Regeneration and Civil Society".
  • Ukraine, Odesa
    Motto: "Renaissance. Technology. Future."
  • Saudi Arabia, Riyadh
    Motto: "The Era of Change: Leading the Planet to a Foresighted Tomorrow".

A six-month bidding period for the EXPO 2030 World Exposition was launched on April 29, 2021 after the Russian Federation submitted its bid for Moscow to the B.I.E..

Other candidacies followed from South Korea for Busan, which will be held on June 23, 2021, at the BIE was submitted.

Italy's candidacy for Rome was announced on October 7, 2021 at the BIE submitted.

The penultimate was Ukraine's candidacy for the city of Odesa on October 15, 2021.

And on the last day of the application period, Saudi Arabia submitted its application to host EXPO 2030 for the capital city of Riyadh on Oct. 29, 2021.

The BIE closed the list of candidates at 5 p.m. CET on October 29, 2021. This means that the number of candidates will remain at five.


Further process of EXPO 2030 application phase:

From the moment the list is closed, the project review phase of the application process begins, during which each candidate submits a detailed application dossier to B.I.E..

This phase of the project review for the 2030 World Expo will take place in approximately one and a half years (October 2021 to mid-2023).

The BIE will organize "fact-finding missions" in this regard and evaluate the feasibility and viability of each application project.

The organizer and host country of the 2030 World Expo is expected to be chosen at the end of 2023 by the BIE-Member States elected in a General Assembly on the principle of "one country, one vote".
